This document contains several amendments to the City of Miami’s Building Code (Ordinance No. 1554) enacted between 1941 and 1950, covering permit fees, structural standards, and fire safety zones.

Building Permit Fees

Two ordinances amended Section 203 to adjust building permit fees based on estimated construction costs. Ordinance No. 2972 (1945) established fees based on cost per cubic foot for various building groups and types, with a penalty of doubled fees for work started without a permit (p. 325-327). Ordinance No. 4049 (1950) updated these fee schedules to reflect increased building costs, raising the cost per cubic foot for most categories (p. 328-330).

Structural Standards and Materials

Several amendments updated technical requirements for construction materials and methods:

  • Cellular Steel Floors: Ordinance No. 3334 (1947) added detailed specifications for cellular-steel-floor-standards, requiring astm a24542t-grade steel, minimum gauge No. 18 thickness, and fire-resistive protection including concrete fill and ceilings (p. 331-332).
  • Foundations and Masonry: Ordinance No. 3703 (1949) mandated a 12-hour curing period for masonry foundations and specified dimensions for low-wall foundations (p. 334-335).
  • Wood Construction: The same ordinance introduced tables for maximum allowable spans for floor and roof joists based on size, spacing, and load, and restricted the use of 2x4 roof rafters (p. 335-337).
  • Concrete and Steel: It adopted aci 318 47 for reinforced-concrete-design and the aisc steel construction manual 5th edition for structural-steel-design requirements (p. 336).
  • Walls and Windows: Amendments specified reinforcement for concrete columns and U-type beam blocks, and set requirements for plate glass windows and storm shutters (p. 336-338).
  • Metal Roofing: Detailed standards for metal-roofing-and-siding-specifications were added, including gauge requirements, fastening methods, and corrosion protection (p. 339-340).

Fire Zones

Ordinance No. 2471 (1941) expanded fire-zones Number I to include additional areas in downtown and surrounding districts to prevent the erection of new frame structures and reduce fire danger (p. 341-344).
