The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is referenced in the 1935 Miami Dade Building Code as an authoritative body for structural steel design and fireproofing standards.

In Section 2714(d), the code mandates that for buildings over eight stories using steel joisted floor construction, connections between steel joists and primary structural members must comply with the “Steel Construction” handbook published by the AISC, dated January 1934, and its subsequent amendments (p. 216 of 1935-Miami-Dade-Building-Code_p205_224). This establishes the AISC’s role in defining structural-steel-design requirements.

Additionally, Section 4201 of the code permits the use of the AISC’s “Standard Specifications for Fire-Proofing Structural Steel Buildings,” dated October 8, 1927, and its subsequent amendments, for buildings having a structural steel frame, as an alternative to ASTM specifications for classifying fire-resistive construction (p. 281 of 1935-Miami-Dade-Building-Code_p265_284). This reference integrates AISC standards into the fire-resistive-construction-requirements of the code.

Ordinance No. 3703 (1949) further updated the code by amending Chapter 27, “Steel and Iron,” to adopt the Steel Construction Manual of the American Institute of Steel Construction, 5th Edition, as the standard for allowable factors for structural steel requirements (p. 336 of 1935-Miami-Dade-Building-Code_p325_344).
