Fire Resistive Door Specifications

Fire Resistive Door Specifications define the construction, materials, and hardware requirements for doors, shutters, and windows designed to provide a one-hour fire-resistive rating. These specifications are critical for maintaining the integrity of fire-separation-standards and vertical-opening-enclosure in buildings.

Construction Types

The 1935-miami-dade-building-code outlines several acceptable types for one-hour fire-resistive doors fire-resistive-door-specifications (p. 292):

  1. Tin-Clad Wood-Core Doors: Constructed with a core of three plies of wood, one inch nominal in thickness, covered with sheet metal. These must comply with the “Underwriters’ Standard for Tin-Clad Fire-Doors and Shutters” (August 1935 edition) published by the underwriters-laboratories (p. 292).
  2. Sheet Metal Doors with Asbestos: Composed of two sheets of not less than 26 U.S. Gauge corrugated sheet metal on a structural steel frame, with at least 1/16 inch of asbestos insulation between the sheets (p. 292).
  3. Metal-Clad Wood Panel Doors: Wood panel doors with a frame not less than 1 3/4 inches thick and panels not less than 3/4 inch thick, covered with at least 26 gauge metal. Joints must be lapped and nailed tightly (p. 293).

Doors bearing the label of the underwriters-laboratories are accepted as meeting these requirements (p. 293).

Hardware and Installation

Hardware for fire doors must be robust to withstand fire conditions:

  • Materials: Malleable iron not less than 1/4 inch thick or flat rolled structural steel not less than 3/8 inch thick (p. 293).
  • Sliding Tracks: Supported so that a wall fastening is directly opposite each door hanger when closed. Hangers must be fastened with at least three 1/2 inch bolts extending through the door (p. 293).
  • Latches: Not less than 2 1/2 inches by 3/8 inch; latch bars not less than 1 1/2 inches by 1/4 inch (p. 293).
  • Swinging Doors: Hinges for doors up to 8 feet high must be steel (4 1/2” x 4 1/2”, 1/8” thick) or bronze (4 1/2” x 4 1/2”, 3/16” thick) with steel studs and sockets (p. 294).

Installation must follow the “Regulations of the national-board-of-fire-underwriters for the Protection of Openings in Walls and Partitions Against Fire” (p. 294). Doors must fit tightly to stop fire and smoke, and the space around them must remain unobstructed (p. 294).

Windows and Shutters

  • Fire-Resistive Shutters: Must be constructed according to one of the door types specified above (p. 294).
  • Fire-Resistive Windows: Must use frames and sash of solid or hollow metal (not soldered). Glass must be wire glass at least 1/4 inch thick, with no single light exceeding 720 square inches (p. 294–295). Maximum sizes are restricted based on frame type and window style (p. 295).
